It’s not exactly easy being a tank driver. You’ve got engine heat to deal with, noise, a cramped space and perhaps worst of all: a limited view of the battlefield ahead. That’s why the Norwegian army is testing out the Oculus Rift to give the driver a 185 degree view of the track ahead.
It works like this: four mounted cameras on the outside of the tank are hooked up to an Oculus Rift Dev Kit 2 headset on the drivers head. This offers the ability to look around the vehicle without any obstructions, and even look directly up at the sky or down at the ground in front of the tank. This exploratory method of driving a tank is being field-tested because it’s up to 50x cheaper than using other custom hardware and software. The Rift also offers other advantages, including the promise of a heads-up overlay that offers additional information for the driver to process.
Website TUTV has a video of the Oculus Rift being used by tank drivers during recent testing. It’s well worth a watch, and includes subtitles for those who only speak English.
